COAHPERD Executive Board Business Meeting
Renaissance ELOB Magnet
January 21, 2006

  1. Call to Order: 12:58

  2. Approval of Minutes (12/3/05)

  3. Guest Speaker: Patricia Morrison-Hughes (Central District Convention Manager)
    • Our bid prompted by Missy Parker (past president- 02) to have Central District Convention in Colorado started back in 2004 when COAHPERD made a proposal to have the Central District convention in Colorado. Central District accepted our proposal over Wyoming. Patricia was then appointed manager of the convention.
    • Central District convention is like our state convention, only with 9 states in total involved.
    • Colorado has 20 presenters at Central District Convention.
    • Pre-Convention will be on the 22nd of March. Leading the way for the pre-convention are the founders of adventure-ed the Rohnke’s. This is a great opportunity to see them, because they are touring days are slowing down. You need not be a member of COAHPERD to attend pre-convention.
    • The keynote speaker at the Central District Convention will be Erik Weihenmayer. Eric is the blind man that climbed Mt. Everest. If you were at the state convention in 2004 you heard his guide speak. Eric is very expensive and the Central District Convention is still looking for sponsors to cover the cost of bringing him to Colorado to speak.
    • Patricia is asking everyone to spread the word on the off-site tours. This is a great opportunity for people that are not from Colorado to experience our beautiful state. These expeditions are run through a private company.
    • Patricia is still looking for donations of items to be sold in the silent auction. If you have anything that you would like to donate, contact Patricia. All proceeds from the silent auction go to Boulder Expand.

  5. Reports of Special Committees / Officers
    • Legislative Update(Rick Metz)
HB 1021, a bill from Representative Debbie Benefield, require school districts to only hire endorsed Physical Educator to teach PE classes in their schools, has passed the Education House committee. Many people, including Mary Lou Miller, Terry Todd, Judy Cooper, Aaron Bertoli and Stacey Fowler came forward to testify for the Bill and all made strong points for the endorsement need in Physical Education. The only concern by a couple committee members was the fact that small districts may have difficulty complying in the near future. A compromise was reached and the requirement and the requirement would not be measured until 2010. I talked with Brendan Burns, AHA Grassroots network contact and will send a legislative alert to all CoAHPERD. I will ask them contact their representative voicing support for this Bill. A press conference has been planned January 23rd from noon to one o'clock at Joe Bazzanella's elementary school. Representative Benefield, House Colleagues, Howard Griffith and several other speakers will promote quality Physical Education and House Bill 1021. Joe's students will demonstrate Physical Education activities for the press. Everyone is welcome to attend and show support for this event. Today I will take the executive board to contact a legislative representatives using CoAHPERD website. I will also hand each board member a flyer outlining the legislative process and facts about our government leaders. I am planning a meeting with Colorado's Lt Governor with the House Representative Todd, to ask for support of Physical Education in our State. We will also take this opportunity to educate our leaders about quality Physical Education practices. Some "up coming" issues which CoAHPERD may have a position are the SAR report to parents form and all day kindergarten. I am going to organize a tour of our capital for any of our executive board members who might be interested. Look for the ALERT in your email inbox and the coverage of the press conference.

    • American Heart Association (Michele Kiminau)

    • Journal Update (Rochester)
Reminder to all board members, turn in your articles for the next Journal. The deadline to turn those in is January 31, 2006. Kristine has stepped down as editor for the Journal. We need to find someone that is willing to take on this task.

    • Treasurer (Cooper)
Mary Lou Miller gave us the 2006 Budget Report.

    • Convention Exhibits (Mason)
During the 2005 CoAHPERD Convention in Breckenridge, we had 22 exhibitors. They have given us feedback that convention was a very positive experience. They liked the fact that all professionals had to walk by their booths while in line for lunch. Next year the exhibitors will need to be charged more so that CoAHPERD can make a profit off of the space rented. Seven of the exhibitors that were at the CoAHPERD convention will be at Central District Convention.

  6. President (Diane Kriz)
